How to Find Who Is Older and by How Much

Compare two dates of birth to find the older person and the exact age difference.

The person with the earlier date of birth is older. To find how much older, compare both full dates.

Enter the two dates in the calculator. It will tell you who is older and show the exact gap.

Find the earlier date

Check the year first. If both people were born in the same year, check the month. If the month is also the same, check the day.

Example:

  • First date: 12 March 1992
  • Second date: 25 August 1996

The first date is earlier, so the first person is older.

Find how much older

Start from the earlier date. Count full years, then full months, then the days left.

For the example above:

  • 4 full years take us to 12 March 1996.
  • 5 full months take us to 12 August 1996.
  • 13 more days take us to 25 August 1996.

The first person is older by 4 years, 5 months and 13 days.

What if both dates are the same?

If the two dates of birth are the same, neither person is older by date. The age difference is zero days.

Why current ages can confuse you

Two people may say they are 30 and 25 years old. This sounds like a five-year gap. But whole-number ages do not include months and days. The exact gap may be a little more or less than five years.

For a correct answer, compare the dates of birth instead of the ages people say.
