Easy steps
Start with the earlier date. This belongs to the older person. Then count:
- Full years
- Full months after those years
- Days left after those months
For example, compare 4 June 1988 and 19 January 1993.
- Four full years take us to 4 June 1992.
- Seven full months take us to 4 January 1993.
- Fifteen days take us to 19 January 1993.
So, the age difference is 4 years, 7 months and 15 days.
You can check the result by moving forward from the earlier date. If the final date becomes 19 January 1993, the breakdown is correct.
How to calculate it by hand
Write the dates in the same order: day, month and year. Start with the earlier date.
First add as many full years as possible without passing the later date. Then add full months. Finally count the days left. This forward-counting method is easier to understand than borrowing numbers in three separate columns.
Do not convert every year to 365 days or every month to 30 days. Those shortcuts give an estimate, not an exact calendar gap.
Why the full date matters
Imagine one person was born on 31 December 2000. Another person was born on 1 January 2001. Their birth years are different, but they are only one day apart.
This is why you should use the day, month and year for both people.
Another common case is two people born in the same year. Someone born on 2 January and someone born on 30 December are almost one year apart even though their birth-year difference is zero.
Month-end and leap-year cases
Some dates need extra care. Months contain different numbers of days, and February sometimes has 29 days.
For example, moving one month forward from 31 January cannot end on 31 February. A calendar calculation must use a clear month-end rule. Leap-day dates also need a clear rule when the comparison year has no 29 February.

Mistakes to avoid
- Do not subtract only the birth years.
- Do not treat every month as 30 days.
- Check whether the date is in DD/MM/YYYY format.
- Use a four-digit year, such as 1995 instead of 95.
- Check the dates once before trusting the answer.
- Do not confuse a fixed age gap with the difference between completed ages today.
In India, dates are commonly written as DD/MM/YYYY. For example, 04/06/1988 means 4 June 1988.
How to read the answer
If the result is 4 years, 7 months and 15 days, the three parts form one answer. It does not mean four years plus seven average months. It means four full calendar years, then seven full calendar months, then fifteen days.
Total days give another correct view of the same gap. Use years, months and days for a natural explanation. Use total days when you need one number for a record or calculation.
Does the age gap change?
No. The exact gap between two birth dates always stays the same. The whole-number ages people say in daily life may look different between birthdays, but the real date-to-date gap does not change.
