How Old Will Someone Be on a Future Date?

To find someone’s age on a future date, compare their date of birth with the future date.

This can help with school admission, exams, retirement planning, birthdays or other future events.

Choose the correct future date

First, decide the exact date you need. Do not use today’s date if the rule gives a different cut-off date.

For example, an exam notice may ask for age on 1 January of a certain year. Use 1 January, not the day you fill in the form.

Count from the date of birth

Count full calendar years from the birth date to the future date. Then count full months and the days left.

The calculator on this site is made for two dates of birth and does not accept future dates. For a future-age question, follow the steps in this guide or use a tool that clearly asks for a future date.

Do not use only 365 days

Some years have 366 days. Months also have different lengths. A calendar method gives a better answer than dividing days by 365.

Birthday check

Ask one simple question: will the person’s birthday have happened by the future date?

• If yes, that year’s birthday is included.
• If no, their completed age is still one year lower.

Always read the official notice. Check the cut-off date, required age type and any special rules. A general calculator can help you understand the dates, but the official rule is final.
